This book offers the hypothesis that the role perceptions as well as the behaviour of councillors depend on their notion of democracy. It addresses the question of how far their understanding of democracy is affected by institutional structure and to the extent that the structures depend on the personal characteristics of the councillors._x005F_x000D_ This book was published as a special issue of Local Government Studies.
