The Art of Living

This title was first published in 2003. Examining the Stoic conception of philosophy as an art of living, with particular emphasis on the relationship between theoretical discourse and practical training Sellars outlines the Socratic background to this conception of philosophy and assesses ancient objections to it.. Especial attention is paid to the relationship between discourse (logos) and training (askesis) in the works of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. The wider philosophical significance of this conception of philosophy is also addressed, and in particular its implications for understanding the relationship between philosophy and biography.
