Making Home in Diasporic Communities
This book demonstrates the global scope of the Filipino diaspora and explores ways in which the dynamics of nation-state institutions, labour migration, and social relationships intersect for transnational communities. Filipinas are seen as mobile, as they have crossed geographical borders and are physically located in the destination country. However, they are constrained by immigration policies, linguistic and cultural barriers and other cultural institutions. Through modalities of language, food, rituals and religion, the book examines ways Filipinas socially and symbolically create a sense of ‘home’, and orient their perceptions, practices and social spaces to ‘the homeland’.
